Kappa Theta Epsilon
Issues Statement on Verdict in
the Murder of George Floyd

One word: guilty. The decision of the jury in the case against Derek Chauvin is, finally, a drop of justice in an ocean of injustice. Sadly, too few cases end with an outcome that honors victims of police brutality.

Kappa Theta Epsilon Sorority, Incorporated applauds the activists, attorneys, friends, and family of Mr. Floyd for their diligence. Despite all evidence that a just outcome might not be reached, they persevered. Today’s verdict is a testament to their resilience.

We acknowledge the work of this jury – the five men and seven women who left their
everyday lives to listen and decide rightly. Their ability to remain resolute and stand for the cause of justice – to decide the case on its merits, rather than personal affinity and public pressure – is to be commended.

The decision of the jury in the case against Derek Chauvin is, finally, a drop of justice in an ocean of injustice.

Though we are grateful for the decision handed down today, we cannot forget that the work continues. Just nine days ago, 20-year-old Daunte Wright’s life was taken by another Minnesota police officer.

So many others go unnamed – their stories untold.

May today’s verdict be a cornerstone of precedent that leads to justice for more of those
whose stories have not been heard.

As HR7120, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, continues its journey through the halls of our legislature, our hope is that we continue the work of accountability at the grassroots level.

America cannot march toward its promise of freedom until there is equity in every corner of the justice system. Let this verdict be a first step.
