ATLANTA – The National Office of Kappa Theta Epsilon Sorority, Inc. joins our entire membership in calling for the immediate release of Brittney Griner.
To date, Mrs. Griner has been held in custody by Russian authorities for more than three weeks on charges of possession of a controlled substance.
Though the details of Griner’s plight may not yet fully be known, the detainment of a US citizen during this time of increased political tension between the United States and Russia is extremely concerning.
Given the stance on “traditional values” currently held by Russian leadership, we further express concern regarding Mrs. Griner’s ability to maintain contact with her spouse and seek adequate legal recourse for her release.
“Though the details of Griner’s plight may not yet fully be known, the detainment of a US citizen during this time of increased political tension between the United States and Russia is extremely concerning.”
Over the course of her career, Mrs. Griner has frequently traveled to Russia. She has played professionally for a Russian basketball team since 2014. Her presence in the country was neither unwarranted nor unfounded.
In support of Mrs. Griner’s wife, family, and teammates, we call for her immediate release and unimpeded travel, so that she can safely return home.
As an organization committed social change and policy advocacy, Kappa Theta Epsilon intends to continue its work to encourage equality and protection for LGBTQ people around the world.
Our thoughts are with Brittney and her family, and we look forward to news of her safe return.
