On this day, 56 years ago, a group of determined Black activists crossed the Edmund Pettus bridge, and walked into history.
People from across the nation converged on Selma, Alabama to take part in this moment. They chose to stand for equality, human dignity, and the right to be treated as Americans.
Dr. Martin Luther King, and his wife, Coretta, was among them.
There were doctors, lawyers, teachers, and housewives. There were domestic workers and mechanics, preachers, and bus drivers. Most powerfully, there were children.
They marched from Selma that morning for us, and we remember.
We recognize the sweeping change that we have seen over the last five decades, and acknowledge that the work is not yet done.
We have a duty – to carry that torch, and continue to fight for full equity as American citizens. You’re invited to join us.
It’s true; we are their wildest dreams. Let us work to be future generations’ fond memory.
To every one who let their foot fall on the bridge FOR US that day, we thank you. To those brave souls we lost in 2020 – Con. John Lewis (D-GA), Rev. C.T. Vivian, Rev. Joseph Lowery, and Atty. Bruce Boynton, rest in power.
Remember them with us; then, join us in the work. Kappa Theta Epsilon honors Black History.
